New Delhi February 20 (India Today) – aThe latest Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2025 are out, and four Indian universities have made it to the list. However, all of them have seen a drop in rankings compared to last year.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru, which was ranked 101-125 in 2023, has now slipped to the 201-300 band. Joining IISc in the same range are IIT Delhi and IIT Madras, both of which were ranked higher last year. Meanwhile, IIT Bombay, which ranked 151-175 in 2023, has dropped out of the list entirely.

A new entrant, Shiksha ‘O’ Anusandhan, has also found a spot in the 201-300 band. SOA is a private, deemed-to-be university located in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. It was established in 1996, and encompasses nine degree-granting schools and institutes.

Global Rankings- Harvard on top Again

Harvard University continues to hold the number one spot for the 14th consecutive year in the THE World Reputation Rankings 2025. The University of Oxford has risen to joint second place with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), making it the highest-ranked UK institution since 2015.

The rankings continue to be dominated by US universities, with six institutions in the top 10. China’s Tsinghua University has held its position at eighth place, while Japan’s University of Tokyo has secured the 10th spot.

New Countries

This year, ten new countries have made it to the rankings, including Malaysia and Poland. Sub-Saharan Africa has also regained recognition after being absent since 2022.

Despite the drop in rankings, Indian universities continue to feature among the most reputed institutions worldwide. However, the decline highlights the need for stronger academic research and global outreach to improve standing in future editions.
