New Delhi, January 27 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday (January 27, 2025) held a phone conversation focusing on continuing the upward trajectory of India-U.S. ties. It was the first conversation between the two leaders after Trump assumed charge on January 20.
Following the conversation, Mr. Modi said both sides are committed to mutually beneficial and trusted partnership.
“Delighted to speak with my dear friend President @realDonaldTrump @POTUS. Congratulated him on his historic second term,” the Prime Minister said on ‘X’. “We are committed to a mutually beneficial and trusted partnership. We will work together for the welfare of our people and towards global peace, prosperity, and security,” he said.
Mr. Trump was sworn in as 47th U.S. President on January 20, 2025. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar attended the inauguration ceremony of Mr. Trump on behalf of India.
The United States is India’s largest trading partner and two-way trade between the two countries surpassed $118 billion in 2023/24, with India posting a trade surplus of $32 billion.
Indian and U.S diplomats are trying to arrange a meeting of the two leader as early as February, Reuters reported last week.
India, a strategic partner of the United States in its efforts to counter China, is keen to enhance trade relations with the U.S. and make it easier for its citizens to get skilled worker visas.
