Colombo, February 7 (Daily Mirror) – A sudden fire broke out this evening on the 35th floor of the infamous Ritz-Carlton Tower in Krish Square, Fort, spreading across six floors. More than 30 firefighters from the Colombo Fire Brigade are still battling the blaze, even two and a half hours after it was reported.
The Colombo Fire Brigade has deployed eight fire engines and water bowsers to douse the fire, which had been reported around 7.42 pm today, a spokesman told the Daily Mirror.
The fire, which is said to have started from the 35th floor over a pile of hardboard used for concrete structures and partitioning, had spread to five more floors beneath, brightly visible to the spectators on the streets around Colombo Fort below the 60 story skyscraper.
The Ritz Carlton Tower of the Krish Transworks Colombo (Pvt) Ltd, of which the construction has been halted midway, is in the centre of controversy with allegations of political corruption and financial mismanagement that runs back to the Rajapaksa regime before 2015.
